Michigan gives us an absurd number of beautiful places to photograph—from Lake Michigan beaches and towering sand dunes to inland lakes, rocky shorelines, and places that barely look like the Midwest at all.
These are some of my favorite Michigan beach + lakeside locations for engagement sessions, family photos, couples sessions, proposals, elopements, and wedding portraits. Some are perfect for barefoot sunset photos along the water; others are worth the drive simply because the landscape feels completely different from anywhere else in the state.

Best Time of Year for Michigan Beach Photos
There really isn’t one “best” season—it depends on the look you want.
Late spring + summer bring longer evenings, green landscapes, warmer weather, and those classic barefoot Lake Michigan sunset sessions.
Late summer + early fall are some of my favorite weeks along the lakeshore. The light gets softer, evenings start cooling down, and Michigan begins shifting into those warmer autumn tones.
Fall can completely transform inland lakes, wooded shorelines, and Northern Michigan locations.
And yes—Michigan weather has a personality of its own. Wind, clouds, haze, changing water conditions, and dramatic skies are often what make a lakeside session feel alive rather than perfectly staged.
